Best wing foil board — the PPC range buyer guide

PPC builds eight wing-capable foil boards covering everything from absolute beginner setups to World Cup race boards, downwind specialists, and foil drive platforms. This guide walks through which board fits which rider, with honest selection logic.

Short version: most new riders want a Soar. Most advanced wing foilers want a Soar Pro. Specific disciplines have specific boards. Read on for the longer version.

Soar — the answer for most riders

PPC Soar Pro full-carbon wing foil board

The Soar is PPC's most-sold board. Full-carbon MCT construction, plug-moulded for stiffness, ultra-light. Volume range 43L to 83L covers most adult riders from intermediate down to mid-progression. For lighter weight beginners (60-75kg) the 73L works as a learner board; for heavier or absolute beginners, the 83L is the right move.

The Soar Pro is the advanced narrow version — same construction, narrower outline, slightly larger volume range (43L-93L). Once you're below body weight volume, the Soar Pro becomes the sharper tool.

Buy: Soar Foil Board or Soar Pro.

Prone Surf — wave-focused wing

The Prone Surf board is built primarily for prone foiling but works as a low-volume wing board for wave riding. Carbon/PVC moulded core construction, smooth surf lines, optimal track placement. Volume 30L-55L for prone-trained riders.

If your wing foiling is mostly wave riding and you want lower volume / more agility, the Prone Surf is the option. For all-round wing foiling, the Soar Pro is more versatile.

Buy: Prone Surf Board.

ZEN — mid-length for wing and foil drive

PPC ZEN mid-length foil board

The ZEN is PPC's mid-length board. Longer outline than the Soar/Soar Pro, higher volume (75L-110L), versatile for wing foiling and foil drive. Fast take-off, nimble carving, MCT construction.

If you ride a lot of light wind, want a single board for wing and foil drive, or value an easier learning platform than the Soar Pro, the ZEN deserves a look.

Buy: ZEN Mid-Length Foil Board.

Link — downwind specialist

The Link is PPC's dedicated downwind foil board. Flat rocker, tracking ridge, lightweight carbon build, 91L-128L volume range. Built for fast paddle-ups, clean bump linking and efficient downwind foiling.

You can wing on the Link if you have to, but its real strength is downwind. If you're not doing downwind, get a Soar or Soar Pro instead.

Buy: Link Board.

R1 — race board

The R1 is PPC's wing foil race board. Lightweight MCT build, designed for early lift in light wind and top speed in pressure. PPC race team riders use it on the World Cup tour — Sean Herbert bronze at Formula Wing Worlds 2025, multiple podium results in the 2026 Europeans season.

Tuttle or track mount available. Volume range 55L-95L.

Buy: R1 Race Foil Board.

VOLT — foil drive

The VOLT is PPC's foil drive board. Full-carbon MCT build, widened Super Trench for fast battery swaps, clean Bluetooth window. Volume range 55L-95L. Built to order to match your motor system.

If you're not doing motorised foil drive, this isn't the board for you. If you are, it's the dedicated platform.

Buy: VOLT Foil Drive Board.

UFO Pro — tow, dock start, kite foil

The UFO Pro is PPC's small-volume specialist. Thin, stiff MCT build with extra nose kick. Volume range 15L-50L — well below body weight territory. Built for wake, tow, kite foiling and dock starts.

Not a wing foil board in the typical sense — you can wing on it if you're advanced and the conditions are right, but the UFO Pro is for riders who've moved beyond wing-only foiling.

Buy: UFO Pro.

Common questions

What's the best PPC wing foil board for a beginner?

The Soar at 73L or 83L is PPC's most-used beginner-to-intermediate board. Full-carbon MCT construction, stable enough to stand and uphaul, stiff enough to feel fast once you're foiling. For lighter riders the 53L or 63L works. For absolute beginners we'd pair you with extra volume.

What's the best PPC wing foil board for an intermediate?

Still the Soar in most cases. The Soar covers 43L to 83L which spans the intermediate volume range. Once you're below body-weight volume, the Soar Pro becomes the sharper tool — narrower and faster.

What's the best PPC wing foil board for an advanced rider?

The Soar Pro for general advanced wing foiling — narrow, stiff, full-carbon, built for early take-off and direct control. The Prone Surf for wave riding. The R1 for racing. The VOLT for foil drive.

What's the best PPC wing foil board for racing?

The R1 race foil board. Lightweight MCT build for early lift and top speed. PPC race team riders have podium results on it. Choice of Tuttle or track mount. Built for World Cup competition.

What's the best PPC board for downwind?

The Link. Flat rocker, tracking ridge, full-carbon MCT, volume range 91-128L. Designed specifically for fast paddle-ups and clean bump linking. The R1 is also capable for lighter, more advanced downwind riders.

How do I choose between Soar and Soar Pro?

Soar for learner to mid-intermediate (43L-83L, wider outline, more forgiving). Soar Pro for mid-intermediate to advanced (43L-93L, narrower, faster, ultra-stiff). If you're on a 73L Soar today and crushing it, the natural progression is a 63L or 73L Soar Pro.

What volume should I get?

Use the PPC volume calculator at /pages/wing-foil-board-volume-calculator for a personalised recommendation. Rule of thumb: beginner = body weight (kg) + 30-40L. Intermediate = body weight + 5-15L. Advanced = body weight - 10 to body weight 0.

How is PPC's MCT construction different?

Plug-moulded full-carbon sandwich construction. Lighter, stiffer and more durable than typical EPS-and-cloth wing foil boards. PPC backs the construction with a 5-year board warranty.

Can I demo PPC boards before buying?

Yes. Auckland riders can demo most of the board range through the Wairau Valley showroom. Tell us your weight, your skill level and your local conditions; we'll pair you with the right board and conditions for the session.

Do PPC boards come with a warranty?

Yes — five years on boards. PPC also offers a satisfaction warranty: return unused gear in original packaging within 14 days for a full refund.
