Wing Foiling Auckland

Wing foiling has taken off in Auckland over the last few years. The North Shore has wind, protected water, and a growing community of riders. PPC Foiling is the New Zealand wing foiling brand built here — designed, tested and supported out of Auckland.

This page is the practical guide to getting into wing foiling in Auckland: where to learn, where to ride, what gear works, and how to demo before you commit.

PPC Foiling in Auckland

PPC's showroom is at 10B/89 Ellice Road, Wairau Valley, Auckland 0629. Five minutes off the Northern Motorway. Visits are by appointment so we can dedicate time to fitting gear, talking through your goals, and setting up demos.

The Auckland team is hands-on with the build and testing of every PPC product — the M1 and M2 wings, the Soar and Soar Pro boards, and the new Orbit Parawing. If you're buying PPC, you're buying from the people who make it.

Wing foiling lessons in Auckland

Intro lessons cover everything a new rider needs in their first session: wing handling on land, getting on and off the board, body position, the first rides on the foil. We supply the board, wing, foil, leashes and a helmet. You bring swimwear and a towel.

Lessons happen at North Shore spots based on the wind on the day — most often Takapuna or Browns Bay. We pair the lesson with the right beginner kit (Soar board, M1-L wing, mid-aspect foil) so you're learning on gear that's set up to make progress easy.

Progression coaching is also available — getting upwind, carving, transitions, foil tacks and jibes. Book a session through our contact page.

Demo a wing or board before you buy

Wing foiling gear is a real investment. The PPC view is straightforward: you should ride the gear before you buy it. Demos are part of how we sell.

Tell us your weight, your typical local wind, and where you're at as a rider. We'll set up matched gear — board volume, wing size, foil — and meet you at a local spot or run a demo session from the showroom.

Demos are weather-dependent but generally available across the M1, M1-X, M2, M1-L and Sonic FDS wing range and the Soar, Soar Pro, Link, ZEN and Prone Surf boards.

Where to wing foil in Auckland

The North Shore has the lion's share of Auckland wing foiling spots. Wind direction usually decides which spot is on.

Takapuna Beach works in northeast or southwest breezes — protected, easy launch, sandy bottom, deep enough water once you're out. Most-used learning spot.

Browns Bay picks up southwest and southerly. Slightly more exposed than Takapuna but cleaner wind on a southwest day.

Long Bay opens up in easterly and northerly winds. A bit further north but worth it when other spots are blown out.

Murrays Bay and Mairangi Bay are good alternatives for southerly conditions, with kayak ramp launches.

Westhaven and the Waitemata Harbour work for inner harbour sessions in westerlies — flatter water, longer runs.

The PPC team will talk through what's actually working on the day when you visit. Auckland wind direction matters more than knowing all the spot names.

Gear for Auckland riders

Auckland wind is gusty and changeable. For most local riders, a quiver of two wings (a 4.5m and a 5.5m or similar) covers 80% of days. Add a 3.5m for big days and a 6.0m for light wind days if you want full coverage.

Boards: most riders progress from a 95-110L learner board to a 65-85L intermediate, then potentially smaller. The Soar's volume range (43L-83L) handles the intermediate-and-up range. The Soar Pro is the narrower advanced option.

Foils: a mid-aspect setup with a 75cm mast is the standard learning kit. Smaller front wings and longer masts come later.

The PPC build story

PPC's boards are built with MCT carbon sandwich construction — full carbon, plug-moulded, lighter and stiffer than the industry norm. Five-year board warranty backs that up. The M-series wings use Exo-PE-85 frames and World Sailing-approved Sonic FDS dual-skin canopy for racing. The Orbit parawing is dual-skin with patent-pending Power Assist Line technology.

Designed in Auckland. Built for serious use. Sold globally. Read the full brand story on the about page.

Common questions

Where is PPC Foiling based in Auckland?

PPC Foiling's showroom is at 10B/89 Ellice Road, Wairau Valley, Auckland 0629 — five minutes off the Northern Motorway and a short drive from Takapuna, Browns Bay and the North Shore foiling spots. Visits are by appointment so we can give you proper time and the gear you want to see is set up.

Do you run wing foiling lessons in Auckland?

Yes. We run intro sessions and progression coaching out of the Wairau Valley showroom and at North Shore spots. Beginner intros include the board, wing, foil, leashes and an instructor. Get in touch via the form on our contact page to book.

Can I demo a PPC wing or board before buying?

Yes. Demos are part of how we sell — we want you on the right kit, not the most expensive kit. Book a demo through the contact page, tell us your weight, experience and typical local wind, and we'll set up matched gear for the session.

What's the best wing foiling spot in Auckland?

For learning, Takapuna Beach in a northeast or southwest sea breeze is the most-used spot. Browns Bay and Long Bay open up more options on different winds. Westhaven and Murrays Bay are alternatives. We'll talk through what's working locally when you visit the showroom.

Do I need my own gear to take a lesson?

No. We supply the board, wing, foil, leashes and a helmet for intro lessons. Wetsuits are usually available on request, but bringing your own if you have one is fine. All you need is swimwear, a towel, and a willingness to fall a few times.

Do you ship outside New Zealand?

Yes. PPC Foiling ships worldwide. Pricing is in USD across the storefront. NZ customers can collect from the Wairau Valley showroom by appointment.

What does a beginner wing foiling kit cost?

A complete beginner kit — board, wing, foil, leashes — is typically between NZD $5,000 and $7,500 depending on the wing size and board volume. Demo and lesson sessions help you avoid buying gear you'll outgrow in three months.

Is wing foiling safe to learn?

Wing foiling is one of the safer foiling disciplines because the wing depowers instantly — you just let go. The hazards to take seriously are the foil itself (always wear a helmet and impact vest near it) and getting blown offshore in strong wind. Lessons cover safety on the first session.
